MORE people should be inspired to look beyond materialistic pursuits so that they can embark on the path of service, said Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak.

Citing the Lions Club, he said the members served as a good example to others.

“The humanitarian services rendered by the club members are a beacon of hope that have illuminated many lives engulfed by darkness.

“As we witness the world becoming more materialistic and individualistic, it is reassuring to know that we are not lacking exemplary individuals who represent the spirit of compassion and selfless giving,” he said.

The Sultan was speaking at the opening of the 49th Multiple District 308 Lions Convention at Stadium Indera Mulia in Ipoh.

The convention aptly themed ‘Loves Makes Everything Possible’ was witnessed by some 1,800 members from 319 chapters of District 308 from Malaysia and Singapore.

Among the guests of honour were Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Perak MIC chief Datuk S. Veerasingam.

Organising chairman Datuk Dr Foo Wan Kien said all hotels in Ipoh were fully booked for the first time with so many delegates attending the convention from April 29 to May 2.

“Today, the whole community can witness Lions marching on with a growing membership.

“This should be an inspiration for other non-governmental organisations to learn from Lions on how we provide continuous service to promote a caring society,” Dr Foo said.

He said the convention also helped to promote Ipoh as a food haven.
